The wild beasts exploded were all about colour. They followed on the post impressionists such as van Gogh, Gaugin and Cezanne in the early 20C . all can be seen as expressionists but the fauves burnt brightly for a short while taking colour to extreme places. Matisse, Derain and many other uses expressive brush strokes with outlandish colour combinations.
