A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway.


This short story by Ernest Hemingway is based at a late night cafe and depicts 2 waiters of different ages and an old man, we are given insight into the different world views of the protagonists and shown how life can change dramatically. From the confidence and beauty of youth to possible despair and alienation in old age it highlights the importance of making the best of what is around you, it is possible to think of the three characters as different incarnations of the same man. Hailed as an existential classic and described by james Joyce as one of the best short stories of all time A Clean , Well-Lighted Place was first published in 1926.
